With a half-Caribbean background that can be traced for 400 years through multiple islands in the anglo-Caribbean, she has migrated repeatedly between Barbados and Canada, lived in France for five years and spends time in Cuba. Her practice as a whole examines the Caribbean from the perspective of a transcultural person living in Toronto. It varies from the political to more personal but there is always an intersection in which she explores meaning, power structures, identity and how that connects to the larger geopolitical context we live in. Her practice uses tools, such as opacity and subversion, found in the Caribbean critical theory of Edouard Glissant and Stuart Hall. An IAMD MFA 2017 graduate from OCAD University, her thesis investigated the culture and history of Caribbean countries and their diasporas within their frameworks of colonialism and forms of neo-colonialism, in particular tourism, through the lens of the landscape. Majerus explored the dynamics of subjectivity and agency that lie between the constructed perception of the Caribbean as Paradise that comes from the history of tourism and the everyday lived experience of the people in that very same landscape of “paradise”. Her more personal artwork frequently looks at the meaning of home to explore family, class, notions of taste, migration and loss. Majerus has exhibited in Canada, Barbados, the Bahamas, Grenada, Trinidad, Bulgaria, Portugal and Paraguay. But not enough (2024) While working on a collaborative project about the monument, I became acutely aware, as a woman, of my disconnect to the history of monuments so frequently representing the so-called heroic, power and war and that less monuments of women and women's stories exist. In lieu of the predominantly patriarchal understanding of the heroic, "The classics can console. But not enough" re-presents monumental events or influences that I have experienced in my life, such as the profound influence of growing up on a small island surrounded by water has had upon me, growing up white in a country that is 95% Afro-Caribbean, migration and the meaning of home and family, the aging process, the fact that I never had children when society expects children as a norm, and caring for other women as a nurse. The title comes from Derek Walcott's poem Sea Grapes. Recognizing the male dominance in the Caribbean literature canon, nevertheless, to me as a Caribbean person, this line encapsulates the re-centering of stories of the Caribbean. In his writing, Walcott made connections between the Greek Isles and the Caribbean archipelago reframing the islands from insular and irrelevant to interconnected -island to island to mainland and bridges the cosmopolitan intersection of ancient cultures in Greece that arguably birthed Western civilization, to the centrality of the more recent Caribbean, with its complex history of colonization, slavery, race and tourism, in the making of the modern Western world. A series of now countries that were influenced by Europe and colonialism but were equally influenced by Amerindians, people from various African nations, India, China, the Middle East to become something new, something creole. By exerting my own creolized, transcultural, female place into a historical art timeline -collapsing space and time-, this series subverts the Eurocentric and male-oriented history of monuments. In this series of self-portraits, I adapt the poses of ancient Greek statues such as Nike (Victory) adjusting her sandal c 410-450 BCE or Hermes and the infant Dionysus 4th BCE and still lives which include props to reference “monumental”influences in my life: a conch shell, sea eggs, a large linen table cloth that belonged to my maternal Caribbean grandmother, a pineapple - a symbol of hospitality, coral, a piece of limestone that I took from a landslide in Barbados and PPE. In my continued exploration of landscape as a metaphor for identity, place and history, the images are layered with photographs from my archive of the sky, sea, sand and foliage in Barbados. 2024 20:53:47 +0000 www.alexandramajerus.com https://alexandramajerus.com/The-Shape-of-Memory-4 The Shape of Memory (2022) Whenever I visit my mother in Barbados, she tries to throw away belongings from the family home. Shoeboxes of heavily damaged family photos from the 1980s - printed with poor quality one-hour printing - made it to her list. The print quality combined with the intense tropical humidity mean that the images are damaged by mildew and stuck together. Now a collection of small uneven bricks, they contain the narrative of my youth, portraying family and friends -a number of whom are no longer alive -and landscapes of a more isolated, pre-internet time on the island, a time that no longer exists. Even if carefully peeled apart, many of the images are only partially legible with ink transferred onto the backs of others or mottled by mildew, abstracted and oddly beautiful. the past and recreate memories through photographs. It considers what it means to not have any visual mementos of your life. What do lost and illegible photographs represent, particularly when the concept of home becomes ambiguous? How do images become memories in themselves? How do these damaged images become a metaphor of the imperfection of human memory? The unpeeling, layering and reconstruction of the "photo bricks" tells a story of loss due to migration and climate that is common to many islanders and migrants. Fragments consists of several enlarged scans of the archival family photographs paired with photo collages and abstracted drawings of my family tree located throughout the Caribbean based on my DNA. Fragments mimics how our memories can be lucid at moments and completely inaccurate at others pairing memories together incorrectly. Constructing is a series of 15 images of photo-sculptures in which I use the stuck together photographs to reconstruct half-forgotten memories and create new memories. Traces is a series of 15 images of the backs of the photographs, which told as much story as the fronts. Parts of different images transferred onto the backs as they became stuck due to humidity. My mother's handwriting could be seen regularly noting the event, the date and sometimes the names of the people found in the photograph. Traces honours women who are often the archivists of families, keeping track of events, documenting the stories of their families.&nbsp; Recollecting is a contemplative video of the images being pulled apart. With a nod to Richard Serra’s Tilted Spheres so familiar to many Torontonians as they travel through Terminal 1 at Toronto Pearson airport. Like Serra’s massive installation, it invites viewers to consider the space that photographs hold within culture in terms of the dominance the visual has on our perception of the world, the importance we place on images within our culture and the fragility of photographs whether through the decline of analogue photos or the over-abundance of digital images. <img width="2666" height="2000" previous two years, two trips down to Barbados with my brother to see my father, doctor’s visits, closing up his business there, and death - all in the space of two months. During that time, the last place that my father requested to go before he was unable to leave the house was to Foul Bay to spend a quiet afternoon lying on the sand in the shade of a tree. The isolated beach is located in St Philip off the tourist path on an island greatly dominated by tourism. The beach has no amenities, no bar, no restaurant, no chairs, no umbrellas, no beach sweepers, no lifeguard, the sea can be rough and there is one portable washroom and a standpipe. It feels remote with only a handful of locals sometimes just sitting in their cars, having a drink, catching the breeze, a few fisherman and the odd individual swimming. In my continued exploration of landscape as metaphor for place, history and identity, I captured the length of the bay. It is easy to look back at the place that was home and idealize it. Similarly when someone close passes away, one tends to consider the good times. A Return to Foul Bay is both a returning to the land and a looking back at my father’s life but, instead, it strives to present the beauty, the “ugly”, the improvised, the passage of time, loss and growth. The photographs reflect upon not only the loss of a parent but also the loss of a home as I lose my familial connections to the land. The body of work is presented either as a photobook or a series of up to 35 photographs loosely installed in a dispersed salon-style manner in order to create a contemplative space in which the viewer may traverse the beach in their own time/space. A Return to Foul Bay also takes on travel photography and/or the coffee table book and travel magazine - constructs in themselves of idealized space— to problematize the fictitious “Caribbean as paradise” which usually ignores the people living in the space.
